British Christmas

Christmas time has come to mean lots of adverts promoting potential gifts, and children around the world writing letters to Father Christmas.

For many British kids, this means checking out the Argos catalogue and circling as many things as possible (since it was founded by Richard Tompkins in 1973.) At least, that's how me and my friends used to do it.

Despite the usual grumblings by the British public about Royal Mail, Christmas cards (which accounts for most of the years sales in greeting cards) tend to be delivered through the affectionately termed "snail mail".

Royal Mail know how popular they are at Christmas time and have dedicated a special part of their site to helping children send letters to Santa and are even trying to reply to them all.

But, for those of you out there that wish there was less of a focus on taking gifts... check out this new John Lewis advert. One of the most loved, perhaps because of its surprising ending:

TV SCHEDULE:

Whether you prefer giving or receiving gifts, one thing is for sure in most British households... tuning in to the Queen's Christmas Message, every year at 3pm.

Then of course a dramatic episode of EastendersCoronation StreetEmmerdale or some other soap. This year should include millions of people sitting down at 9pm for some  Downton Abbey. In terms of films, almost always Love Actually (where Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister) features at some point.
