Burns Night

What is it and why does it exist?

Robert Burns, from a 1787 portrait by Alexander Nasmyth

Burns Night ~ A Scottish tradition celebrating the life and works of one of their most famous poets, Robert (Rabbie) Burns on what would have been his birthday. 25th January.

As Scottish communities have dispersed, the nights are now held all over Britain (and perhaps the world!)

Many dress up in traditional Scottish dress (Clan Kilts) or at least wear a little Tartan.

Bagpipes are played, Haggis is eaten, whiskey is drunk and of course poems by Burns are read aloud.

The place he was born in Ayrshire is now a museum.
